Call for Student Moderators

Calling all students! Apply now to be a student moderator at the 30th Latornell Conservation Symposium!

The Symposium is currently soliciting college and university undergraduate and graduate students to moderate sessions at the Symposium, in exchange for a free conference registration and INCREDIBLE networking and learning opportunities.

This year’s theme is ‘Changing Climates: Our Watershed Moment’ and the Symposium will feature groundbreaking work in the areas of Nature Based Solutions and Restoration, Program Transformation and Governance, BIPOC lead projects, with workshops and sessions hosted by public, private and academic sector experts.

The Duties

  • Attend a virtual, pre-conference training session.
  • Arrange travel to and from the Symposium; travel costs and arrangements are not included, although carpooling may be an option.
  • Moderate 2-3 sessions throughout the Symposium, which entails helping to coordinate workshops and sessions, mediating Q+A periods, and providing logistical support for session speakers.
  • Assist with a small number of other duties as assigned.
  • Attend the entire conference and stay to assist with cleanup.

Conference Information

The 2023 Latornell Conservation Symposium will be held from the afternoon of Monday, October 23rd to the afternoon of Tuesday, October 24th at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario.

If you are interested in pursuing this exciting opportunity, note that positions are limited. Selections will be made by a selection committee, and preference will be given to those who have not moderated at the Symposium before.

To apply, please complete the Latornell Student Moderator Call form by the extended deadline of September 28th, 2023. In your submission, please indicate:

  • Any previous involvement with the Latornell Conservation Symposium
  • Any previous experience with public speaking, moderating, or facilitation
  • Areas of academic/personal interest that align with the Symposium theme
  • What you hope to gain from attending the Symposium

Successful applicants will be notified the week of October 2nd, 2023. Finally, please note that interested students are eligible to apply for both the Poster Presentation and Student Moderator components of the Symposium if they choose to do so – both are wonderful student opportunities!
