Green Infrastructure Manages Stormwater while Providing Additional Benefits
By Deb Martin Downs (TRCA) and Colleen Cirillo (Green Infrastructure Ontario Coalition and TRCA)
Recent monitoring and modelling activities in southern Ontario reveal that urbanization is degrading the environmental health of many watersheds. Policy documents, including Credit Valley Conservation’s Credit River Water Management Strategy Update and Toronto and Region Conservation’s watershed plans, conclude that a new approach to stormwater management is essential to watershed health and climate change resiliency. These and other conservation authorities are proposing a shift away from conventional approaches and including green infrastructure in the response to water management in urbanizing areas. READ MORE
Deb Martin Downs is the Director of Ecology at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Colleen Cirillo is also with TRCA and the Green Infrastructure Ontario Coalition GIOC. Colleen is speaking on Friday morning in a session entitled “Making the Case for Green Infrastructure”. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is one of the founding members of the Coalition.
CHART YOUR OWN COURSE – Having Fun at Latornell!
We know we make you work hard at Latornell with all the terrific Keynote Speakers and Concurrent Sessions. but, we also want to make sure you have some fun, too. So we are offering a great Chart Your Own Course on the night of Wednesday, November 16th. After ‘schmoozing’ and eating desserts in the Exhibitor’s Hall after dinner, there will be three key activities – East vs West Hockey Tournament, Jungle Mini-Putt and an Astronomy Night, so plan on bunking in with your friends already booked at the Inn and join us! Posters and additional information available online.
Talkin’ Hockey
The 2011 NHL season is a great warm up to the Annual AD Latornell Hockey Tournament! As in the past, this event will take place on Wednesday (November 16) evening as part of the Chart Your Own Course activity. EAST versus WEST will go head to head in attempt to take home the coveted ADL Hockey Trophy. East/West dividing line is Hwy 400.
UTRCA’s own Wayne Gretzky of hockey, Bob Iszumi of fishing and Dora the Explorer of Planning, Jeff Brick will spearhead this activity. Registration is informal – just show up at the arena on Wednesday Night. Full equipment is required and all levels of play are welcome. We’re looking for goalies – so please give Jeff a call if you want to be in goal.
When asked if he expected a big turnout, Brick shrugged and said – "…well, I really embarrassed a few of the players last year with my superb skills so it’s hard to say if they’re up for the rematch or not. I heard Wilkinson might be sidelined with a head injury from our last game, but he should be around unless he’s a 'hypocritical puke'." There was no comment from Wilkinson who was at his weekly physiotherapy appointment.
More details to follow with respect to game times and level of play. For more information, contact Jeff Brick at brickj@thamesriver.on.ca or call 519-451-2800 ext. 228.
…and Golf!
NEW THIS YEAR! Come up with a snappy name and enter a team of four into the Jungle Mini-Putt Tournament. Prizes for first and last place! Shotgun start at 8:30. For more information and to register, contact Jessica Isaac jessica.isaac@eco.on.ca.
