Chief Stacey Laforme is a prominent Indigenous leader and environmental advocate who supports community health and environmental sustainability. Born and raised on the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Chief Laforme has dedicated over 18 years to serving his community, including his role as Chief, a position he held from 2015 – 2023.
Chief Laforme’s journey into leadership began at a young age, marked by a strong work ethic that saw him join the Ironworkers Union and later attend college. After retiring from ironwork, he was elected to Council in 1999, where he quickly became a vocal advocate for the ecological, cultural, and environmental significance of the Greenbelt lands. His commitment to these issues has earned him recognition as a leading voice for Indigenous rights and environmental protection in Ontario.
In addition to his leadership role, Chief Laforme is an accomplished poet and artist. He uses his creativity to inspire and elevate the discourse surrounding environmental stewardship. He has been honored as the third Honorary Senior Fellow of Massey College, a prestigious accolade that places him among notable figures such as the Duke of Edinburgh and the Chancellor of Oxford University.
Chief Laforme’s philosophy centers on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature, advocating for a paradigm shift in how society perceives environmental challenges. He emphasizes the importance of caring for Mother Earth as a shared responsibility and seeks to raise consciousness around the need for collective action toward a sustainable future.
Currently, he is involved with initiatives such as the Sacred Trust Foundation, and the Erika Foundation, which focus on raising awareness about critical social issues, including suicide prevention. With a heart dedicated to humility and kindness, Chief Laforme continues to inspire those around him to embrace their collective role in nurturing and protecting the planet for future generations.
