In 2017, funds raised during the 2016 Dream Auction will provide opportunities for grant recipients to participate in Ontario’s premiere conservation symposium.

What is the Grant?

The Latornell Conservation Symposium Grant was established in memory of A.D. Latornell to provide support for students and active members of the conservation community so that they may attend the annual Latornell Conservation Symposium. Eligibility is determined on the basis of the criteria outlined below.

The number of Three Day Grants and One Day Grants available in 2017 is to be determined.

The Three Day Grant includes: one three (3) day registration package, meals and 2 nights accommodations at the Nottawasaga Inn. Successful applicants will be asked to double up for accommodations due to limited room availability. Transportation is not included.

The One Day Grant includes: one (1) day registration package for the day of your choice including meals for that day. Accommodations and transportation are not included.

What Principles Guide the Grant Award?

  • Applicants must be able to declare and demonstrate that without the grant they would be unable to attend the symposium.
  • Applicants must submit a complete application including one letter of reference prior to the application deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  • Successful applicants must commit to attend the symposium. Grants are not transferrable to other individuals.
  • Successful applicants must complete and return an evaluation form following the symposium.

Who is Eligible?

  1. Students registered in an Ontario university or college.
  2. Individuals affiliated with an Ontario not-for profit/community conservation organization including volunteers, interns and contract employees.
  3. Individuals seeking employment in the conservation field.
  4. Applicants must be 19 years of age or older.
  5. Individuals who have not been a past grant recipient.
  6. Generally applicants should be living, working or studying in Ontario.

Priority will be given to applicants from organizations, universities or colleges that have not previously participated. If the grant program is over-subscribed no more than two participants from any one organization, university or college may receive grants.

Testimonials

Many positive comments about the symposium have been received from previous grant recipients. The Latornell Conservation Symposium Steering Committee, on behalf of all grant recipients, thanks everyone who has contributed to the success of our Dream Auctions.
The Latornell Symposium was a great opportunity for me to learn more about the current issues in the conservation arena. The workshops and speakers were relevant, interesting and inspiring. Throughout the symposium I was able to connect with many individuals who are working to provide all Canadians with a bright and healthy future
Kim Ootjers, Conservation Halton
The conference experience introduced me to a number of conservation challenges and the innovative people working to solve them. I left with a clearer picture of current issues – and excited to face them
Jane Simmons, University of Guelph
The treatment I received as a grantee was above and beyond. The steering committee did a great job of providing opportunities for grantees to get to know each other and the symposium in general was a great networking experience. The topics covered by speakers were vast and informative. Overall the Latornell Symposium proved to be a great experience.
