Latornell Leadership Awards

Since its inception in 1999, the Latornell Leadership Awards have recognized individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to the conservation movement in Ontario, whether through their professional work or volunteer efforts.
The Latornell Leadership Awards, named in honour of Arthur D. Latornell, a prominent conservationist in Ontario and a strong advocate for Conservation Authorities, aim to celebrate those who have dedicated their careers to learning, innovation, and leadership in the field of conservation.
From 1999 to 2019, the Latornell Leadership Awards have been presented to 103 deserving individuals.
ELIGIBILITY:
An individual who has demonstrated impactful leadership accomplishments in the conservation field is eligible for this award. Such contributions could be through work, career, or volunteer experiences.
These contributions can include but are not limited to:
- Conservation legislation/policy development/reform
- Conservation innovation (best management practices in forestry, agriculture, water technology/techniques/management)
- Habitat enhancement (restoration/rehabilitation projects)
- Conservation research/fieldwork/studies
- Concepts in Sustainability
- Environmental education/communications
- Natural resource management/planning
- Advocacy
- Community organization
NOMINATIONS:
Nominations are made by organizations and agencies involved in conservation, such as Conservation Authorities, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and universities.
SELECTION COMMITTEE:
The Latornell Conservation Symposium Executive Committee appoints a selection committee that includes representatives from the Steering Committee, Conservation Ontario, and the University of Guelph.
RECOGNITION:
Latornell Leadership Awards Recipients are recognized at the Leadership Awards Luncheon held during the Latornell Conservation Symposium.
The Centre for Land and Water Stewardship, University of Guelph, displays a plaque with all the recipients’ names.
